Biofuel Production by Dehydration of Ethanol-Water mixture Using Biobased Adsorbents

چکیده
Bioethanol is considered to be the most optimistic biofuel. Hydrated ethanol with more than 2% (v/v) of water is not completely miscible with gasoline, so complete dehydration of ethanol is required. Distillation alone cannot concentrate ethanol beyond its azeotropic point so various other methods are used to concentrate ethanol to completely anhydrous state in short span of 93-99.80% (w/w) ethanol. Among the separation methods, adsorption process is a simple and economical alternative. The potential of new Biobased adsorbents was assessed in separation of ethanol-water mixture. Biobased adsorbents such as bleached banana stem pulp, sodium hydroxide promoted soyabean meal and potato starch based adsorbents were used in this study. The water concentration in the feed solution was varied from 5% to 18% (weight basis). A glass adsorption column with an inside diameter of 1.54 cm was used to generate breakthrough curves to determine the effectiveness of the adsorbents. Heating jacket was provided to maintain the packed-column at constant temperature. In addition maximum water uptake and surface area of adsorbents were examined. Dehydration of ethanol vapour achieved is due to an interaction between free hydroxyl group of starch and the water molecules.

Differentiation Between Fossil and Biofuels by Liquid Scintillation Beta Spectrometry - Direct Method
Liquid scintillation spectrometry of 14C in gasoline/ethanol and diesel oil was carried out using QUANTULUS® and straight mixtures of fuel and an organic scintillation cocktail. A linear correlation was found between the concentration of carbon that originates from the bioethanol (biocarbon) and the fuel mixture's 14C activity in the range 0 – 100 % (m/m) bioethanol content. Because of the good...

H-ZSM-5 nano-zeolites were synthesized by hydrothermal method using tetrapropylammonium hydroxide (TPAOH) as a template in the presence of various TPABr concentrations. The effect of different TPABr/TPAOH molar ratios was studied on the catalytic performance of dehydration of methanol to dimethyl ether (DME) in a fixed bed reactor under the same operating conditions (T=300°C, P=1 atm, and WHSV=...
متن کاملEnergy Optimization of Bioethanol Production via Hydrolysis of Switchgrass
In this work, we propose the optimal flowsheet for the production of bioethanol from switchgrass, via hydrolysis. A superstructure embedding a number of alternatives is proposed. Two technologies are considered for switchgrass pretreatment, dilute acid and ammonia fibre explosion (AFEX) so that the structure of the grass is broken down. Next, enzymatic hydrolysis follows any of the pretreaments...

This study demonstrates the feasibility of integrating the production of nano-fibrillated cellulose (NFC), a potentially highly valuable biomaterial, with sugar/biofuel (ethanol) from wood fibers. Commercial cellulase enzymes were used to fractionate the less recalcitrant amorphous cellulose from a bleached Kraft eucalyptus pulp, resulting in a highly crystalline and recalcitrant cellulose (RC)...
متن کاملA non-equilibrium thermodynamics model of multicomponent mass and heat transport in pervaporation processes
The framework of non-equilibrium thermodynamics (NET) is used to derive heat and mass transport equations for pervaporation of a binary mixture in a membrane. In this study, the assumption of equilibrium of the sorbed phase in the membrane and the adjacent phases at the feed and permeate sides of the membrane is abandoned, defining the interface properties using local equilibrium. The transport...
